Personal insights, shoe selection, layers for coastal winds, and fueling tips for surviving Sweden’s wild autumn ultramarathon.
Author’s Note on Course Layouts: Race conditions and routing can evolve over time. When I ran Kullamannen, the course featured multiple loops around the Kullaberg peninsula. Please note that starting with the 2025 edition, the route has been updated to a single-loop layout. However, the core challenges—mud, coastal winds, long night stretches, and nutrition strategy—remain identical.
The suggestions below are based on my personal race experience. I hope these insights and practical tips will be helpful as you prepare smoothly for your own journey!
👟 Shoes, Mud, & Trail Conditions
Checking Forecasts & Shoe Choices
While Kullamannen has a relatively flat overall profile compared to alpine ultras, foot fatigue can build up quickly if your footwear doesn’t match the terrain. In dry conditions, a road-to-trail hybrid shoe works very well. However, when heavy autumn rains hit, the trail mud becomes slick and deep.
During my race, hybrid shoes struggled to gain traction in the muddy sections. I ended up switching to dedicated trail shoes with deeper grips at an aid station, which made a huge difference in stability.
🌙 Night Strategy, Coastal Wind & Clothing
Both the 100M (18:00 start) and 100K (22:00 start) launch after sunset, sending runners straight into long Nordic night hours. The coastal breeze can feel sharp over time, making a clear layering strategy essential.
-
Sizing Up Your Shell Jacket: Choosing a waterproof/windproof shell jacket one size larger than your usual size allows you to pull it on quickly over your running vest. This provides very rapid temperature control without taking off your pack.
Note on Trade-offs: Wearing your jacket over your vest makes quick thermal adjustments fast, but accessing items inside your vest later means taking the jacket off first. If you plan to wear your shell continuously from start to finish, wearing it under your vest may be a more convenient option.
- Headwear & Gloves: Merino wool beanies and warm gloves work wonderfully for managing body heat along exposed coastal paths.
- Front-Pocket Headlamp Batteries: Storing spare headlamp batteries in the front pockets of your vest makes battery swaps quick and seamless without stopping to remove your vest.
🍌 Fueling & Drop Bag Considerations
Overall, aid stations offer wonderful support throughout the course—including Näak energy drinks, fresh water, sandwiches, seasonal fruits, and homemade Swedish cinnamon buns at locations like Mölle and Råbocka. Warm meals are also available at key points, such as hot vegan paprika & tomato soup with bulgur at Råbocka (approx. 65.8 km for 100M / 46 km for 100K) and hot Gulasch soup at Båstad.
Personal Fueling & Drop Bag Ideas:
- Test Fueling in Training: Be sure to test all your intended race nutrition (gels, drink mixes, bars) during long training runs in advance to ensure your stomach handles them smoothly under stress.
- Drop Bag Essentials: Packing a fresh shirt, extra socks, alternate shoes, or personal favorite comfort snacks in your drop bag offers a valuable physical and mental reset.
- Keeping Solid Snacks Soft: In chilly Nordic weather, chocolate or dense energy bars can become quite firm and hard to chew. Storing them in inner pockets close to your body heat keeps them soft and easy to consume on the run.
🧠 Course Pacing & Runner Mindset
The 100M distance historically sees a finish rate around 48%. One factor is that entry opens nearly a year in advance, making it tricky for busy runners to maintain ideal training consistently over many months. Additionally, long flat stretches require strong mental discipline to maintain a steady pacing and fueling routine.
Pacing Recommendations:
- Höganäs to Mölle (Start Section): The initial stretch is flat and easy to run. Treat this section as a gentle warm-up rather than pushing the pace.
- Kullaberg Reserve: Enjoy the iconic views near the lighthouse, but stay mindful of loose stones and tree roots on singletrack trails. Saving energy here pays off later.
- Skåneleden Trail & Late Rolling Hills: Save mental and physical strength for the later terrain past Stora Hult and Hovs Hallar along the Skåneleden trail sections. Also, remember to give free-grazing sheep and cattle a calm, respectful distance!
