🌬️ Coastal Winds & Weather Preparation

Embrace the Sea Breeze with Smart Wind Protection

Running along Gotland’s open coastline offers breathtaking Baltic views, but it also means you will likely encounter steady ocean breezes and cool gusts. Because sea wind is damp, staying warm means you need windproof layers, not just thick insulation.

  • Pack a Quality Windproof Shell: A lightweight, packable windshell or waterproof jacket is your best friend along the coast. Putting it on before you start feeling chilled keeps your body temperature stable when running directly into headwinds.
  • Protect Your Extremities: A headband or beanie to cover your ears and lightweight gloves make a world of difference when you are exposed to ocean air for a long time.
  • Flexible Layering: Dress in layers so you can easily unzip or roll up sleeves as you transition between sheltered forest paths and open coastal stretches.
💡 Encouraging Tip: Wind is part of the coastal trail experience! Keeping your core warm allows you to relax your shoulders, breathe easily, and take in the beautiful Baltic landscape without wasting precious energy.

🧭 Easy Navigation & GPS Confidence

One of the greatest joys of the Gotland Ultramarathon is its intuitive course design. The golden rule for the entire race is wonderfully simple: “Always keep the sea on your right side” (ALLTID havet till höger)!

  • Clear Trail Markings: The route is well marked with orange flags, Klintkustleden trail signs, and local trail markers guiding you along the coast.
  • Load the GPX File for Total Peace of Mind: For extra confidence, especially if you are running solo, download the official GPX file from the race organiser and upload it to your GPS running watch. Having the turn-by-turn prompts or the map view on your watch reduces navigation anxiety so you can focus on enjoying your run.
💡 Wrist Check Tip: Set your watch navigation before race morning. Seeing that reassuring breadcrumb line on your watch gives you peace of mind from the start!

🍌 Fueling & Aid Station Breakdown

Aid stations along the course are divided into unmanned water/sports drink checkpoints and fully manned aid stations offering food and snacks. Remember to carry your own soft flask or collapsible cup, as disposable cups are not provided on the course!

⚠️ Essential 50 km Fueling Warning: There are no food aid stations between the Start and Lickershamn (22.5 km), nor between Lickershamn and Brissunds Badplats (40 km). It is a long 17.5 km stretch between the Lickershamn and Brissunds Badplats aid stations! You must carry enough calories (and a bit extra just in case) to get you through these long sections. Be sure to pack enough energy gels or solid food to sustain you through these sections that don’t provide food at the aid stations.

Drop Bag Logistics

You can hand over a finish line drop bag at the start area in (Hallshuk). Pack a warm change of clothes, dry socks, and any other post-race gear you want to have at the finish line. The race organizers will transport the drop bag directly to the finish line area at Östergravar in Visby. Keep in mind this is a finish line only drop bag; you will not be able to access the drop bag at any of the aid stations.

⏱️ Target Schedule & Cutoff Benchmarks: 50 km Course

⛰️ Course Elevation Profile (~400 m D+)

  • 0 km – 8 km: Flat coastal start to warm up your legs.
  • 8 km – 34 km: Rolling terrain with frequent ups and downs. Features the course’s largest climb (~40 m gain) around the 17 km mark.
  • 34 km – 47 km: Mostly flat and fast, allowing a steady rhythm through Brissund.
  • 47 km – Finish: Final upward incline leading to the historic finish inside Visby.

Whether your goal is simply to enjoy the day within the generous 9-hour limit or push for a strong sub-6 hour finish, having clear pacing benchmarks keeps your race structured and stress-free. The target splits below are derived directly from historical finisher data.

🚀 Sub-6 Hour Target Schedule (5:55 – 6:00 Target Finish)

Checkpoint Target Elapsed Time Target Time of Day (09:00 Start) Segment Pace Range
Lickershamn (22.5 km) 2h 30m – 2h 32m 11:30 – 11:32 AM 6:40 – 6:45 min/km
Brissund (40.0 km) 4h 38m – 4h 42m 13:38 – 13:42 PM 7:18 – 7:25 min/km
Visby Finish (50.0 km) 5h 55m – 5h 58m 14:55 – 14:58 PM 7:40 – 7:50 min/km

💡 Critical Schedule Takeaways (5:55 – 6:00 Target Finish)

  • Sub-6 Strategy: For a 6-hour finish, aim to reach Lickershamn (22.5 km) right around 2h 30m – 2h 32m (6:40–6:45 min/km average). Pace naturally slows across the undulating technical trail between Lickershamn and Brissund (7:18–7:25 min/km).
  • Capitalize on Flat Sections & Prepare for the Final Rise: Use the flat stretch from 34 km through Brissund to steady your rhythm. Keep a little gas in the tank for the final climb into Visby starting at 47 km.

🐢 Stress-Free Finish Schedule (8:45 – 9:00 Target Finish)

Checkpoint Recommended Target Final Cutoff Margin Final Finishers Avg
Lickershamn (22.5 km) 3h 50m 4h 00m 3h 51m
Brissund (40.0 km) 7h 00m 7h 00m 7h 00m
Visby Finish (50.0 km) 8h 45m 9h 00m 9h 00m

💡 Critical Schedule Takeaways (8:45 – 9:00 Target Finish)

  • Pace Wisely Through the Undulations: Most of the course’s elevation gain (approximately 400 m total) is concentrated between 8 km and 34 km. Power-walk the steep ~40 m climb at 17 km to preserve energy, maintaining a smooth average target pace of 10:13–10:22 min/km through Lickershamn.
  • Supportive Cutoff Policy: Remember, as long as you are safe and moving forward, race organisers do not pull runners off the course even if you are slightly past the checkpoint times!

⚠️ Disclaimer: These target splits are derived from historical finisher data and serve solely as reference benchmarks. They do not guarantee a successful finish. Pacing must be managed based on how you feel on race day, your real-time fitness, personal strategy, and race-day weather and course conditions.
