📅 Published: September 2026  |  🔄 Last Updated: September 2026

A beginner-friendly strategy guide for the Gotland Ultramarathon (28 km), covering realistic target splits, coastal wind protection, fueling tactics, and course navigation.

Welcome to the Gotland Ultramarathon (28 km)! Whether you are taking a first step into trail racing or stepping up to longer distances, this 28 km race along the Baltic Sea offers one of the most scenic and accessible coastal trail experiences in Scandinavia.

Starting in Lickershamn and finishing at the UNESCO World Heritage city of Visby, this guide uses finisher timing data to help you build a stress-free pacing schedule, prepare for coastal conditions, and enjoy every kilometer.

🌬️ Coastal Winds & Weather Preparation

Embrace the Sea Breeze with Smart Wind Protection

Running along the open coastline of Gotland offers breathtaking Baltic views, but it also means you will likely encounter steady ocean breezes and cool gusts. Because sea wind is damp, staying warm means you need windproof layers, not just thick insulation.

  • Pack a Quality Windproof Shell: A lightweight, packable windshell or waterproof jacket is your best friend along the coast. Putting it on before you start feeling chilled keeps your body temperature stable when running directly into headwinds.
  • Protect Your Extremities: A headband or beanie to cover your ears and lightweight gloves make a world of difference when you are exposed to ocean air for a long time.
  • Flexible Layering: Dress in layers so you can easily unzip or roll up sleeves as you transition between sheltered forest paths and open coastal stretches.
💡 Encouraging Tip: Wind is part of the coastal trail experience! Keeping your core warm allows you to relax your shoulders, breathe easily, and take in the beautiful Baltic landscape without wasting precious energy.

🧭 Easy Navigation & GPS Confidence

One of the greatest joys of the Gotland Ultramarathon is its course design. The golden rule for the entire race is simple: “Always keep the sea on your right side” (ALLTID havet till höger)!

  • Clear Trail Markings: The route is well marked with orange flags, Klintkustleden trail signs, and local trail markers guiding you along the coast.
  • Load the GPX File for Total Peace of Mind: For extra confidence, especially if you find yourself running solo, download the official GPX file from the race organiser and load it onto your GPS running watch. Having the turn-by-turn prompts or the map view on your watch reduces navigation anxiety so you can focus on enjoying your run.
💡 Wrist Check Tip: Set your watch navigation before race morning. Seeing that reassuring breadcrumb line on your watch gives you peace of mind from the start!

⏱️ Target Schedule & Cutoff Benchmarks: 28 km Course

The 28 km course starts at Lickershamn (11:00 AM) and shares the final 28 km of the ultra race, a very scenic stretch of the course into Visby. The total cutoff window for this race is 7 hours (ending at 18:00). Whether your target is a strong sub- Sub-3 hour finish or a relaxed race finish, the pacing benchmarks below provide practical guidance based on historical finisher data.

🚀 Sub-3 Hour Target Schedule (2:55 – 2:59 Target Finish)

Checkpoint Target Elapsed Time Target Time of Day (11:00 Start) Segment Pace Range
Brissund (18.0 km) 1h 44m – 1h 49m 12:44 – 12:49 PM 5:48 – 6:03 min/km
Visby Finish (28.0 km) 2h 56m – 2h 59m 13:56 – 13:59 PM 7:08 – 7:15 min/km

💡 Critical Schedule Takeaways (2:55 – 2:59 Target Finish)

  • Sub-3 Hour Strategy: To break 3 hours, build your buffer early by reaching Brissund (18.0 km) between 1h 44m and 1h 49m (average 5:48–6:03 min/km). The final 10 km from Brissund to Visby allows for a slightly slower pace (7:08–7:15 min/km) to comfortably cross the line under 3:00:00.
  • Rolling Start (First 12 km): The initial 12 km out of Lickershamn features gentle rolling climbs (+25 m elevation gain). Keep your effort smooth and controlled on these rises to save energy for the flatter, faster sections leading into Visby.
  • Last Push: Keep a little gas in the tank for the final climb into Visby starting at 25 km.

🐢 Relaxed Race Finish Schedule (4:45 – 5:00 Target Finish)

Checkpoint Recommended Target Final Cutoff Margin Final Finishers Avg
Brissund (18.0 km) 2h 45m 3h 30m 2h 45m
Visby Finish (28.0 km) 4h 45m 7h 00m 4h 48m

💡 Critical Schedule Takeaways (4:45 – 5:00 Target Finish)

  • Rolling Start (First 12 km): The initial 12 km out of Lickershamn features a series of gentle rolling climbs and dips about +25 m in elevation gain. Don’t rush these early rises; keep your effort relaxed at a controlled 8:30–10:00 min/km pace to save your legs for the sandy and coastal sections ahead to Brissund.
  • Ample Time Cushion: With a 7-hour total time limit, you have roughly 15:00 min/km of average allowable pace. You can walk whenever you like and still comfortably finish well within the cutoff time!

⚠️ Disclaimer: These target splits are derived from historical finisher data and serve solely as reference benchmarks. They do not guarantee a successful finish. Manage your pace based on how you feel on race day, your real-time fitness level, personal strategy, and race-day weather and course conditions.
